Steve Russo
Steve is a native of Long Island, New York and currently resides in Fairfield, California. He holds a Bachelor in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, VA, and a Master of Arts in Music from California State University, Sacramento. Steve credits as a trumpet player and commercial musician include; lead trumpet for the United States Air Force Band (solo & principal trumpet), Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus (10 years in Sacramento), Gregg Allman, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Drifters, The Shirelles, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Julius La Rosa, Jo Ann Castle, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, and John Fedchock, Lin Biviano, Artie Shaw, and Diane Schuur. Clyde Quick
Clyde Quick has had a successful freelance career since his move to Los Angeles (after attending Berklee College of Music) in 1992 with performances at the Hollywood Bowl, Disney Concert Hall, Playboy jazz festival, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and has made recordings for television and movies. Clyde has also taught trumpet at California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo and is currently teaching music in the Davis School District. He has continued to be an active performer since his move to Sacramento in 2003.
Joe Mazzaferro
Trumpeter, Educator, and Composer/Arranger Joe Mazzaferro has been active in the Sacramento jazz scene since 2002. In 2006, he received his bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of the Pacific and, in 2009, received his Master's Degree in Jazz and Studio Music from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant. While in Knoxville he performed with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra and studied improvisation and composition with Donald Brown, Mark Boling, and Vance Thompson. Joe has also had the opportunity to perform with such jazz greats as Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Jimmy Heath, and Bobby Watson. Joe is currently serving as adjuct professor of Jazz Trumpet at Sacramento State University, and Delta College & The University of Pacific located in Stockton CA. Max Kiesner
Max Kiesner is a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin and band director at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, California. After attending high school, Mr. Kiesner went on to pursue his studies in jazz and music education at Northern Illinois University, home of legendary jazz educator Professor Ronald Carter. At NIU, he had the opportunity to tour and perform with Bobby Shew, Byron Stripling, Claudio Roditi, Eddie Henderson, Donald Harrison, Rodney Whitaker, Red Halloway, Conrad Herwig, Russell Gunn, Allen Vizzutti and Charles McPherson. Currently, Mr. Kiesner teaches various levels of concert/jazz bands and works as a freelance trumpet artist and private instructor. Steve Roach
Steve has been the Director of Jazz Studies at Sacramento State University since 2001. He has also served as Director of Jazz Studies at Baylor University and has held teaching positions at the University of Northern Colorado and Northern Illinois University. Steve's duties at Sacramento State include directing large jazz ensembles and teaching courses in jazz pedagogy and jazz history. In addition, Roach directs the annual Sacramento State Winter Jazz Festival and The Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival.
Steve holds a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from Northern Illinois University, and a Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet and jazz pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.
Professional appearances as an assisting artist include studio and live sessions with such jazz & pop musicians as Tito Puente, Louis Bellson, Conrad Herwig, Lou Rawls, Jon Tchicai, Ben Vereen, Melissa Manchester, Toni Tennille, Roberta Flack, Rosemary Clooney, Jeffrey Osbourne, Carl Fontana, Paquito D'Rivera, the Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras, and others.
Roach also works as a clinician and adjudicator for jazz festivals and various workshops nationwide and has directed several California high school honor jazz ensembles including the Sacramento Capital Section Honor Jazz Band, the San Mateo Honor Jazz Band, the Fresno-Madera County Honor Jazz Band, and the Solono County High School Honor Jazz Ensemble.
